Be Prepared for the Unexpected 

Nearly every event planner has a story of an emergency or crisis that had to be faced.  Some are obviously more serious than others. But regardless of the threat posed, the pre-event planning and contract clauses are typically what matters the most in dealing with difficult situations before and during an event.  

Whether it's a last-minute power outage, equipment failure, medical emergency, or a natural disaster such as a fire or earthquake – if something can go wrong, Murphy and his Law will crash your wedding or special event.  In this buckle-your-seat-belt session, former flight attendant and current “Wedding Professor” Joyce Scardina Becker will discuss how to anticipate potential disasters and handle the unexpected. So grab the oxygen mask, place it over your nose & mouth, and stay one step ahead of any mishaps by having a well-thought-out plan.... Then breathe normally!

Joyce Scardina Becker

An inspiring teacher, a skilled event designer & planner, and an internationally recognized expert on weddings and special events, Joyce Scardina Becker is President of Events of Distinction, an event design and planning company based in San Francisco.  In recognition of her accomplishments as one of the nation’s top event producers, Joyce has been honored with 16 international Gala and Esprit Awards, as well as 33 nominations for these prestigious awards.  

She is the author of Countdown to Your Perfect Wedding, a comprehensive “how-to” book for couples and aspiring wedding professionals, which received an Esprit de Corps Award for “Best Industry Contribution.”

Since 1997, Joyce has been the Founding Director and Instructor of the Wedding Planner Certificate Program, which is offered in both a classroom and online format at California State University East Bay.  Now in its 23rd  year, this intensive 40-hour program was the first of its kind on a university campus, providing a comprehensive education for students who wish to pursue a professional career in wedding and event management.

Joyce attended San Francisco State University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Leisure Studies and Hospitality Management.  She also received a degree in Retail Floristry from City College of San Francisco, and subsequently she earned the esteemed Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credential.  For six years, Joyce served as Vice President of Education for the Northern California Chapter of the International Live Events Association.

About Our Venue

Alpine Ranch

Alpine Ranch, built in the 1980's, was a premier Arabian horse facility, known as Palo Verde, designed as a breeding stable, with 95 stalls, a show barn, 1/4 mile track and formal courtyard.  Custom-milled cedar wood and stained-glass windows are still part of the architecture. The 1900's farmhouse, with original stone foundation, was originally the homestead for the largest ranch in what was known as Sonoma Counties' Alpine Valley.  Today, Alpine Ranch is a working equestrian barn and vineyard; the Arabian show barn has been converted to an event space and the original farmhouse is a guest cottage.


Our large equestrian estate is available for a small number of events a year.  The property is nestled in the Mayacamas mountain range between Calistoga, St. Helena and Santa Rosa.  Your special event can be held in one of our cedar barns, the 13,000 square foot large open courtyard at the center of the equestrian complex, or in what was once the show barn for Arabian horses.

Alpine Ranch is a working barn and vineyards, in addition to being a great place to throw a party. We have horses, hay, rolling fields, and rambling, rustic space under the barn rafters to help make your celebration special and memorable. 


The farm house, built in the early 1900s, was the homestead for the original Alpine Ranch, which ranged hundreds of acres.  At the corner of two idyllic Sonoma County roads, the three bedroom cottage overlooks California Oak trees and horse pastures.  It is surrounded by a secluded yard with fruit trees, including plum, quince, pomegranate, pear and walnut. The soft hills across the way are dotted with sheep from a neighboring farm.  Their gentle bleating, and the neighing of the horses, contribute to the lovely rural setting. But we are minutes away from some of the best attractions in Sonoma and Napa Counties.
